PPP AND THE DESIGN LEGACY

PPP projects have had a chequered design history. Whereas some buildings have been hailed as exemplary, many have been criticised for being unimaginative, cheap or simply ‘bad’. Although the government’s investment into housing, schools and health centres is welcomed, it is essential that these long-term building’s don’t end up leaving us with a legacy of poor design. As Gordon Brown has said, “Design is not incidental to modern economies, but integral”.

PPP Bulletin and RIBA are pleased to announce this one-day conference, which will present the latest thinking on PPP and design – how to ensure your scheme deliver on sustainability, character and layout, and how to avoid falling down bad design pitfalls.

Presentations will include:

  • Placing design at the core of the PPP process
  • Learning lessons from past projects
  • Making PPP buildings more sustainable
  • Contractors' view - cost pressures, design issues and winning the bid
  • Reviewing the evidence for PPP and good design
  • Housing and regeneration stream – ‘Designing communities for the future’
  • Healthcare stream – ‘Delivering Darzi’s vision’
  • Building schools for the Future stream – ‘Design’s place in transforming education’
  • Navigating design as a local authority
  • Dispute resolution in the current climate

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Sunand Prasad, president - RIBA
  • Gordon Clements - Bristol City Council's Building Schools for the Future Project Director
  • Ian Fordham, Deputy Chief Executive – British Council for School Environments
